The Basic Writing Course is designed to introduce learners to the foundational elements of writing, both in fiction and non-fiction. It provides a comprehensive overview of essential writing concepts, including storytelling techniques, genre exploration, structuring narratives, and mastering grammar and punctuation. The course is structured into five interactive modules, each focusing on key aspects of writing development.

Course Modules:

Module 1: Introduction & Fiction/Non-Fiction Genres

Learners will explore different fiction and non-fiction genres, understand their unique characteristics, and identify how storytelling varies across genres.

Module 2: Telling Your Story

This module focuses on the core components of a story—characters, setting, and the 5 W’s (Who, What, When, Where, Why). Students will engage in personal assignments to develop their storytelling skills.

Module 3: The Art of Outlining

Students will learn how to create effective outlines for both fiction and non-fiction works, including the Fiction 3-Act Outline and Non-Fiction Outline techniques.

Module 4: The 5 Elements of a Story & Character Types

This module delves deeper into the elements that drive compelling narratives, beginning with an exploration of plot, character, setting, conflict, and theme. Students will learn how these five foundational elements work together to create engaging stories. The module then expands into an in-depth study of character types and explores two distinct methods for revealing characters to readers, ensuring well-developed, believable personalities that enhance the overall narrative.

Module 5: Grammar & Punctuation

The final module covers the basics of grammar and punctuation, ensuring students can write clearly and effectively.
