My Story

I Wasn’t Supposed to Be a Writer

I didn’t find out I had a learning disability until I was in college. Before that, I just knew reading was really hard. I loved stories, I always did, but comprehending what I read slowed me down so much that reading started to feel like a chore instead of a joy.

So I found another way in. I became a movie buff: television, film, theater, anything that let me experience a story without the barrier. That love of storytelling eventually pulled me toward theater, then film school at SCAD, where I learned to bring stories to life through scripts, cameras, and editing suites.

Writing a novel? That wasn’t even on my radar. I thought that ship had sailed.

“My son keeps asking me if there’s anything I like to do other than writing and editing. I told him writing is fun to me. Non-writers can’t imagine that. But if I love what I’m writing, it’s not work. It’s creative play.”

I had stories inside me that needed to get out, so I taught myself the craft, one skill at a time: outlining, character development, plot structure, and grammar. The whole thing. Eventually, I wrote “Rain”.

The Book That Took 20 Years

Rain Was Personal. That’s Why It Was Hard.

Writing “Rain” took me about 20 years, on and off; not because the story wasn’t there, it was always there, but because the subject matter hit close to home, and I wasn’t sure I was ready to go there publicly.

I kept wondering: people are going to ask me, “Is Rain you? Did you go through that?” I wasn’t sure how to answer. Some of what Rain experiences, I experienced in similar ways, and there was the question of family privacy. Things I found out, years later, that some of my own family members had been through too.

As I grew, as a writer and as a person, the fear started to shift. It became less about me, and more about the reader sitting somewhere alone who had been through something like this, and didn’t know there was hope on the other side.

“It became more of a burden to help other people. To let them know they’re not alone and that there’s healing on the other side.”

“Rain” was published, and readers called it “an amazing masterpiece,” and “a true must-read.” That response confirmed everything. The story needed to exist, and the wait was worth it.

Why Scribe Academy Exists

I Wasn’t the Only One Struggling

After writing “Rain,” something became clear. Everywhere I looked, I saw people who had a message, a story, a calling to write; especially prophetic scribes in the church. Powerful messages, real insight, real gifts from God, but no clear path to getting it written, finished, or published.

They told me: “I always wanted to write a book, but I don’t know where to start,” or “I have a good idea, but I don’t think I can actually write.” Some had the same learning struggles I did, some felt like they didn’t have enough to say, and a lot of them just needed someone to show them it was possible.

That’s why I created Scribe Academy: not just as a writing course, but as a full pathway from idea to published book, with the spiritual component built in for those who are answering a divine calling to write.

“The outline was a game changer.” That’s what writers tell me after our first session. Sometimes the biggest barrier isn’t talent. It’s just knowing where to start.

Scribe Academy is different because we don’t just teach writing craft; we walk you through turning a manuscript into a published book. And through Break of Dawn Ink, we can do that publishing work with you, or for you.

What is a Prophetic Scribe?

A prophetic scribe is someone with a divine calling to write things from God and about the things of God. A scribe communicates through writing, filmmaking, songwriting, editing, and more. If you feel called to create with purpose, you may be a scribe.

Beyond the Books

A Little More About Me

Family First

Wife, mom of three, and household CEO. My 7-year-old daughter keeps me young and loves storytime. My kids keep me grounded and remind me why stories matter.

First Book Love: Pippi Longstocking

Pippi taught me how to dream and use my imagination. A fearless girl who made up ways to have fun and brought joy everywhere she went. She showed me that creativity can carry you further than reading ability ever could.

Writing Is Play

My son wants to know if I do anything besides writing and editing. Honestly? Not really. And that’s okay. When you love what you write, it stops being work. Coming up with new storylines and characters is just creative play to me.

Music, Movies & Good TV

When I’m not writing, I’m listening to music, singing in the car or shower, or getting lost in a good movie or series. Storytelling in every format, basically. Some things never change.
